[00:00:04] When writing starts to feel like a fight, the problem usually isn't your motivation. That resistance is a protective mechanism. Your brain is trying to keep you safe from judgment, from failure, from stretching too far too fast. And that protective instinct is what we'll explore in my workshop, Write Without Resistance.
[00:00:24] Every writer knows that feeling of getting stuck, of starting over, of losing joy in the process of writing that we love so much.
[00:00:33] But resistance isn't laziness, and it's not lack of discipline. It's your mind saying, something here feels risky.
[00:00:41] And over time, that protection can turn quietly into self-sabotage, over-planning instead of drafting, perfecting instead of finishing, or comparing yourself until nothing you write feels good enough.
[00:00:56] Hi, I'm Sue Brown-Moore, a developmental editor, story coach, and founder of The Story Sorcery Society. I help romance writers understand their writing patterns so they can create stories and careers that actually work in real life without the burnout, the guilt, or any pressure to just push through it.
[00:01:15] In Write Without Resistance. I teach my Augmentations framework, a compassionate psychology-based system that names and redirects four patterns of creative self-protection. There's the Shield, the overthinker who plays it safe. The Flair, that perfectionist who has to polish everything before finishing. The Mask, the people pleaser who hides her real voice. And the Armor, the self-critic who shuts down before she can be judged.
[00:01:50] Once you know which of these four shows up the most for you, you can start working with it, instead of fighting against it. You'll learn what that pattern is trying to protect you from and how to gently flip it into something that supports your writing instead of blocking it.
[00:02:08] We will start by identifying which Augmentation most often appears in your writing life. Then I'll walk you through how to gently shift and redirect that instinct using short, guided reflection prompts. By the end of this session, you'll have a personalized Flip It plan. Small, realistic actions you can use any time that resistance tries to take over.
[00:02:33] You will leave this session understanding which one of the four emotional patterns primarily drives your resistance and why. How to redirect it without guilt or criticism. And how to build consistent, sustainable writing habits that feel like support, not struggle.
[00:02:53] This is a 90-minute session with short teaching bursts, guided reflection, and optional quick sprints to help you start your own Flip It plan right there in the room.
[00:03:05] There is a two hour deep-dive version that expands this work into story craft, showing you how these same patterns can shape character behavior and emotional arcs on the page.
[00:03:16] That deep-dive version is a great example of how essential the connection between the writer and the hero on the page truly is.
[00:03:25] I have spent more than a decade helping romance authors strengthen their stories from the inside out. My work in story psychology and developmental editing has shaped how I teach today, always focused on helping writers create stories that feel true to their characters, their readers, and most importantly themselves.
[00:03:47] I've had the privilege of teaching at events like the Las Vegas Writers Conference, TropeCon, and the HEA Sessions live workshop series. And my work has been featured in Publishers Weekly. And I have been named in LA Weekly as one of the top book coaches to watch.
[00:04:02] I am a lifelong romance reader myself, and working with romance writers is my passion. And it is my creative super niche. It's the thing I love most in all the world.
[00:04:13] I have been the acquiring editor for two category romance lines for a small publisher, a fully booked freelance developmental editor, and I am now a story revision coach and educator for published authors.
[00:04:25] And it all comes back to one goal, helping writers reconnect with the work you love.
[00:04:31] Write Without Resistance gives authors a simple, compassionate system to understand why they get stuck and how to get unstuck for good.
[00:04:41] Choose this workshop if you want attendees to leave not just feeling inspired, but supported, capable, and ready to write again.

Why Choose Sue
I help writers understand the real reasons behind their creative resistance, without guilt, judgment, or “just push through it” advice. After more than a decade of working with romance authors, I’ve seen how protective patterns like perfectionism, overthinking, or people-pleasing can quietly drain the joy out of writing.
That’s why I developed my Augmentations framework. It gives writers a language for what’s really happening beneath resistance and shows them how to work with their creative instincts instead of against them.

My approach blends story psychology, mindset coaching, and gentle practicality so writers can build sustainable creative habits and reconnect with the work they love.
This session comes from lived practice, not just theory. It’s the same process I use in my own work as a story coach and developmental editor in my high-tough workshops and group programs (like the Story Sorcery Society).
I 100% trust what you’re putting out there.

Write Without Resistance: The 4 emotional patterns that hold writers back

Every writer wrestles with resistance at some point.
You sit down to write and suddenly everything else feels urgent. Or you second-guess every word before it hits the page. That isn’t lack of discipline. It’s self-protection.
In this interactive session, developmental editor and story coach Sue Brown-Moore introduces the four Augmentations—Shield, Flair, Mask, and Armor—emotional patterns that quietly shape how writers protect themselves from creative discomfort.
You’ll learn to spot which one most often appears in your own process, how it shows up in drafting and revision, and what it’s really trying to protect you from.
From there, Sue guides you through gentle “flip it” strategies that redirect each pattern into something useful. Instead of fighting yourself, you’ll discover how to work with your protective instincts to build trust, reduce burnout, and find your creative rhythm again.
This is not a “just push through it” session.
It’s a practical, understanding approach that helps you create lasting change through awareness and self-support. You’ll leave with a personalized reflection worksheet and a concrete plan to soften your most common resistance triggers.
So you can write with more ease, consistency, and joy.

The expanded version of Write Without Resistance takes the Augmentations framework one step further by exploring how these same emotional patterns appear in your character arcs.
You’ll learn how a hero’s “protective instincts” can drive believable motivation, deepen internal conflict, and create more authentic emotional arcs in your stories.
Writers will analyze sample scenes, identify each Augmentation in action, and begin applying the framework to their own works-in-progress. This session includes guided discussion, optional reflection sprints, and group Q&A for story-specific examples.

Sue's concepts transformed my writing
I just wanted to drop a quick note to share some good news, my book Other Worlds won a Stiletto Award this year (2025) from Contemporary Romance Writers in the speculative/paranormal division!
I know that the work I did in your courses contributed to that success. The concepts you taught helped me shape character arcs in ways that truly transformed my writing. Thank you for all you do for writers.

A wonderful talent for explaining
I have been following your teachings for some time now, and you never fail to amaze. You have a wonderful talent for explaining what many would consider obscure.
Sue pushes me to write better and better novels. She’s a fantastic editor. I don’t know how long it would’ve taken me to sharpen up my game without her, and I really don’t want to speculate on that either. Thank you, Sue!

First, I want to say you are a phenomenal speaker and teacher. I watched your "Liar, Liar, Plot on Fire: A 5-question story diagnosis technique" webinar back in March and loved it. So of course I'm excited by the prospect of even more of your content.

Faelan Aurelius,
Writer of Character Driven Fantasy and Scifi
I think you're a badass, man, honestly.
Genuinely before I encountered the things you teach, I couldn't find a model for the emotional journey that felt real.
And as someone who understands a lot of this stuff better intuitively than I do logically, it's been immensely helpful having it laid out in a clear and concise manner.
Your ideas are clear and simple. I truly believe now (after trying to write by beat) that knowing what the Root Fear is absolutely key since it is the engine behind the character driven plot/story.

I greatly appreciate your teaching -- style and content. I've read many of your articles / emails over the last 2 or 3 years.
